When I read about the exploits of my fellow Jalop/Opponauts, I often find my self saying, "that sounds so cool, I'd like to do that one day". I'm also reminded of past plans forgotten, postponed, or abandoned due to money, time, or just life in general. I suspect this may be a fairly common sentiment, so I propose a discussion of automotive events in which you'd love to participate, but as yet, have not. I refer to realistic, achievable goals. I don't mean "race in the Indy 500", unless you are a professional driver with the skill required to do so. My own examples would include The One Lap of America, some skid-plate racing as seen on Jalopnik earlier this week, the Texas Mile, and the 24 hours of Lemons. A little less realistic, but still attainable would be Bonneville or El Mirage. I would love to hear your examples, mostly so I can forlornly add them to my list .

Absolutely rallycross. I fully intend to participate in an amateur event omce I'm in a slightly better financial situation; it just looks so ridiculously fun.

A day at Nurburgring in pretty much any Audi with quattro system.

Gatebil. I think that the first gis results give you a bit single sided view of the event.
Bonneville would be great also but it's a bit far from where I'm located at.

I suspect many here would consider the 'Ring to be their version of automotive Mecca.

yeah, but that single side looks like a nice side to be on.

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me, I don't want to race but I do want the driving experience it offers.
I chose it as it's a realistic weekend road trip for me, when I can justify the expense, and have a suitable vehicle. Not a place i'd take the DD, even if it was an Audi.

150+ (preferably 200+ so I could get in that club) at Bonneville.

yup, it would be nice to get a hat.

You can pick up the equipment for a run as mentioned fairly reasonable on the SCTA classifieds. I would probably do it on a Hayabusa. They go 185 stock and I could tow it on my trailer with my truck.

Beating Alex Roy's cross-country record. I'll probably die trying but...
If I'm looking for something attainable within the next month, it's probably doing an autocross with my own car, or actually doing a Skip Barber class at Laguna Seca.

I would love to do a grassroots rally event or a targa with my wife. I'd do it in just about anything, but to make it achievable, I'd just buy an old subaru rs to strip down or buy a used rally RSTI or something... My wife can read and cite extremely quickly, doesn't get carsick, trusts my driving like no one else I know, and will put up with anything. On our honeymoon, I rented a Wildcat dune buggy and did miles and miles of rally stage style trails in it. It even sprinkled (borderline rained) for a while and she was still having a great time! This is with me scandy flicking, taking jumps, and the whole 9-yards. It was actually the most fun day I've ever had in my life!

I really want drive up to Snoqualmie, Washinton and go to the DirtFish Rally School. The one day package is $1,150. Pricey but it offers a lot, plus it's not your car. Every time I look into it the classes are sold out. A friend of mine gave her daughter a three day package, because she was a terrible driver. Dangerous terrible. Well she apparently had a blast, and came away with an experience that helped her not be so panicky, indecisive and unsure of herself. It just looks like fun, and there is no way that I wouldn't learn something new.

I did it back in 2005. It is like automotive crack. Every time I see a picture I want to go back. I'm getting the shakes now. So awesome.

I have been fortunate enough to do and go to some cool automotive places. The LeMons car is sitting under its tarp in the yard after its sixth race, I've got pictures from our time driving the Ring and Le Mans this summer was amazing. The one thing I'm working toward participating in is next year's Hotrod Power Tour. My dad is finishing the restoration on his 1964 Comet Cyclone that he has had since high school and I'm using this as a tool to get him to get it back on the road. They are running from Charlotte (near where I live) to Milwalkee (near where they live) with cool stops in between. I'm thinking a week long road trip for me, my dad and my 6 year old son in a cool old hotrod. Stuff memories are made of.

crap...I completely forgot about the Power Tour ! I've wanted to do that for so long. Oh...and Drag Week too !

Funny you mention that after a previous thread talking about cars of choice to do such a run. Have you ever given it serious thought?

Oh, definitely yes. I also wrote this: http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/five-new-cars-…

I've definitely given it serious thought, but I would need a lot more money, mainly for the car and equipment. That and I'm probably still way too young to do it.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Still in college and stuck dreaming of hitting the Santa Monica Pier in under 30. If I had something a little better than what I'm driving now (2012 RR Sport... most unjalop car and I'm literally being forced to drive it), I think I would at least strap in a bunch of fuel cells and buy a V1, laser jammers and a scanner to give it some half ass attempt, but I only get 14 mpg at 100 so its not even worth the attempt in a 2 ton brick of british turd.

Personally, I wouldn't complain about driving an RR Sport, since I'm also a big Land Rover fan. But I'm sure you could trade it in for something after college. I once tried to rationalize a run in family Odyssey, with hilarious results after I brought up the topic with some friends.

I like the Sport at certain times, like Michigan winters, but most of the time I'd rather not be associated with the typical driver. Although when you're hurtling down the highway at 95+ at night, people tend to get out of your way quickly, which is empowering to say the least. But my dad has an E63 AMG S-Model Wagon on order for January... I can't even contain my excitement. Now THAT would be a 31:04 assault car.
